Managing Ash Dieback
Ash Dieback 'Hymenoscyphus `Fraxineus'
Ash dieback, also known as Chalara dieback of ash, is a disease caused by a fungus called Hymenoscyphus fraxineus that infects and damages ash trees.
The fungus can cause leaves to wilt and blacken, bark to crack and fall off, and can eventually lead to the death of the tree. Ash dieback is highly contagious and can spread quickly through airborne spores, making it a significant threat to ash tree populations, particularly our UK native species. Ash dieback was first reported in the UK in 2012, although it is believed to have been present in the country for several years prior to that.
Whilst there is no evidence of full resistance to the disease, research and experience in Europe indicates that up to 5% of the ash population may be genetically tolerant to ash dieback, which is hopeful when looking at preserving this tree species and preventing its extinction. This natural tolerance in some trees provides an opportunity to maintain ash in the UK because the tolerance may be inherited.
There are ways that we, through careful intervention, can help manage an infected tree. The success of these tactics all depends on the length of time a tree has been infected, the age and health of the tree, and the environmental conditions in which it is growing. Those with mild to moderate infections may survive for several years or longer. Each case is unique.
While it is possible to manage the infection, it is difficult to completely eliminate it. Some management strategies include removing infected branches and trees, promoting tree health through fertilisation and pruning, and replanting with resistant species. It is recommended to work with a qualified arborist, to determine the best course of action. Our team at Haringey Trees have specialist knowledge in this area and can provide a free on-site consultation to help provide some peace of mind and ways forward for any of our clients who have a duty of care for ash trees, with or without Hymenoscyphus fraxineus infection.
